Thermal photography technology and infrared camera have been around for some time. The technology was originated for military use and has been adapted to the private sector. For a long time the prices of these highly technical digital infrared cameras were extremely high. As the technology developed more and more companies began making these cameras more affordable dropping the prices down. The prices are now falling to the point were this equipment is being used on energy audits and home inspections all across the country.
An Infrared Camera or Thermographic Camera is basically a device which is concerned with Infrared energy. As you know Infrared light is a part of electromagnetic spectrum, which consists of various radiations arranged in increasing or decreasing order of their wavelengths. Just as an ordinary camera is used to detect visible light to get pictures, a regular camera can also be engineered to detect Infrared light and is known as Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera. The infrared camera is basically concerned only with Infrared light and not any other radiations. One of the most sought after aspects of the camera is, it can work in total darkness. There are thousands of uses for infrared cameras and they are becoming extremely helpful in rescue operations in buildings, mines and subways.
An Infrared Camera can be divided into basically two types : one is the cooled infrared detectors and other one is the uncooled infrared detectors.
The Cooled infrared detectors is contained in a Dewar or a vacuumed sealed case and then cooled to very low temperature. The cooling is done in order to achieve the proper operation of Semiconductor used in the detectors.
The Un Cooled Infrared detectors are advantageous over the Cooled Infrared Camera as they don’t require cooling and hence no expensive and bulky coolers are needed. These cameras are often smaller when compared to cooled infrared detectors and also cheaper. These use sensor in order to operate at an ambient temperature.
